Elmbridge is a collection of chess study notes written in London. It deals with the part of a game that is easy to hurry past: what a player noticed, what was missed and why an attractive move survived consideration when a simpler one did not. The board is small enough to fit on a kitchen table, and most of the exercises fit into an ordinary evening.

These pages do not offer a complete opening repertoire or a course with a promised result. They describe study habits that can be repeated with your own games. Positions are treated as questions with a limited amount of time available. A conclusion may change when a better defensive move appears, and the notebook should show that change rather than quietly replace it.

No club, event or named player is represented by the site. There are no ratings claims, products or sponsored recommendations. Where a chess engine is useful, its role is to check a human explanation and reveal the assumption that failed. The explanation still has to be written in words that make sense when the screen is switched off.
